There’s something undeniably comforting about walking into a place that knows exactly who it is. Smith & Wollensky, New York’s iconic steakhouse, officially opens its doors in Kuala Lumpur on 19 December 2025 at the Ground Floor of Suria KLCC — and from the moment you step inside, it feels like a confident arrival rather than a loud debut.

Founded in New York City in 1977 by restaurateur Alan Stillman, Smith & Wollensky has long been regarded as “America’s Steakhouse” — celebrated for its old-school charm, exceptional hospitality, and uncompromising approach to great steaks. Now, that legacy makes its way to Malaysia, marking the brand’s first outpost here and adding Kuala Lumpur to a global map that spans cities like London, Taipei, and Seoul.

What sets the Kuala Lumpur opening apart is how naturally it blends heritage with locality. While the spirit of a classic American steakhouse remains firmly intact, the space, menu, and experience have been thoughtfully adapted for the local audience — creating something that feels familiar, yet distinctly its own.
A Classic American Institution, Reimagined for Kuala Lumpur
Walking into Smith & Wollensky Kuala Lumpur, the first impression is unmistakably New York — confident, refined, and warmly familiar — yet thoughtfully layered with Malaysian character. The interior balances old-school steakhouse elegance with contemporary polish: rich leathers, dark woods, and statement lighting are softened by subtle local design accents inspired by batik patterns, pewter craftsmanship, and the national flower, the bunga raya. It feels both grand and welcoming — a space designed for long conversations, celebratory dinners, and memorable evenings.

During our visit, the dining experience delivered exactly what Smith & Wollensky promises — precision, generosity, and depth of flavour. We started with the Marinated Grilled Octopus, perfectly tender with a smoky char, followed by a Burrata Salad that struck a clean, creamy balance — simple, fresh, and well-executed.

The highlight, naturally, was the Bone-In Rib Eye — beautifully grilled, robust, and deeply satisfying. Served alongside asparagus and portobello mushrooms, the steak was elevated further by classic accompaniments of chimichurri sauce and natural jus, allowing the quality of the beef to take centre stage.

What stood out was the thoughtful inclusion of Smith & Wollensky’s in-house signature sauces, adding a distinctive regional touch to the experience. From the aromatic Lada Kelapa, to the vibrant Hijau Asia, and the tangy depth of Asam Jawa, these sauces offer diners an opportunity to explore new flavour pairings while staying true to steakhouse tradition.

Dessert was indulgence done right. The Skillet Baked Chocolate Chip Cookie, served warm and comforting, was pure nostalgia, while the Key Lime Pie delivered a refreshing, citrusy finish — a fitting close to a well-rounded meal.
