After a rather successful debut a few years ago, one of Disney’s most celebrated titles ‘Inside Out’, returns with a promising sequel.
Simply called ‘Inside Out 2’ the animated feature continues to create the same magic it conjured in the entertaining prequel.
This time around, Riley who just hit puberty welcomes new emotions in shaping her belief system as a teenager.
Thanks to the collaborative hard work of her earlier emotions which helped her find her calling as a young lady in the first episode, Riley now has to learn to deal with a new bunch of interesting emotions.
Her current controlling emotions consisting of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust are abruptly interrupted by their new colleagues namely Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment who claim the control console in Riley’s ‘head’.
After developing a knack for ice hockey and excelling at the sport, the present Riley is then offered to join an ice hockey camp for potential star athletes. On the way to camp, she learns that two of her best friends will be going to a new school.
Riley struggles to accept the unexpected news and begins to battle with these new emotions while coping with pressures of making it to the new hockey team and accepting her friends’ departure.
The storyline of the movie is actually simple as it shows the turbulence faced by many teenagers in facing life’s daily challenges.
However, what makes this sequel compelling is the clever projection of how all of us are effected by so many emotions that reign over our judgement. This is playfully displayed in the movie as Joy and Anxiety have different opinions on Riley’s decision making.
The obvious difference in opinions between the two emotions then causes a riff as the new team of emotions think that the older emotions are not fit to make judgements for Riley. They then try to get rid of the older emotions and assume control of Riley’s mind.
Though the movie pokes fun at how our emotions collide in our heads, it makes viewers reflect on their current life choices and journey.
And living up to Disney’s magic, the amazing visual effects portrayed in the animated feature are bound to keep viewers mesmerized throughout the whole film.
Like all Disney flicks, it wreaks of life lessons and advice that may prove useful for everyone who watched the movie, regardless of age, race or gender.
All in all, it is a good wholesome piece of entertainment which should be watched by the whole family.
Inside Out 2 is currently screening in cinemas across Malaysia starting June 13th 2024.
